Name of Artist: Deborah Tilby
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: Judge: William Schneider, Representational Professional
Judge's Comment: "Another gem! Superb composition; the red boat really pops against the blue-green and violet harmony of the background. I admire the artist’s decision to depict the boat as listing. I assume the boat’s keel is resting on the bottom and that the tide has gone out. The diagonals of the boat in opposition to the walls behind give a lot of motion to what otherwise could have been a very static design."
Name of Artist: Tracy Ference
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: William Schneider, Representational Professional
Judge's Comment: "Great little pastel portrait! I particularly like the depiction of light and shadow on the model’s hair. The pastel medium doesn’t get the respect it deserves."
Name of Artist: Jaq Grantford
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: William Schneider, Representational Professional
Judge's Comment: "I like the concept (the contrast of the Victorian architecture and the yellow safety cone). But was really impressed by the drawing in this piece! I personally would never take the time to render the intricate design on the floor (moving back in one-point perspective) but I admire Jaq Grantford’s diligence in getting it right."
Name of Artist: Marne Jensen
Award: Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org panel of art professionals, Abstract Professional
Judge's Comment: “Layer rich canvas with lovely complimentary hues and textural patterns. Feels like a cozy room after dinner with skylight and candle light coming together at once. Combine with these visuals the sound of music playing softly, and one feels an overall sense of calm at day’s end.”
Name of Artist: Margaret Kent

Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org panel of art professionals, Abstract Professional
Judge's Comment: “The term ‘carpe diem,’ means ‘to urge someone to make the most of the present time,’ and this painting gives us the sense of peering out a window with an intriguing view. In the mind’s eye, we see a lively waterfront town and can’t wait to be there. Multi-transparent layers add to the ‘window’ effect; raised textures add to the sense of a physical reality.”
Name of Artist: Rosella Farmer
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org panel of art professionals, Novice / For the Love of Painting
Judge's Comment: "This imaginative, carefully detailed painting is an adventure all unto itself. Strands of hair morph into a kaleidescope of shapes, colors and patterns. In this unique way, the artist shares her sense of abundance and enthusiasm considering the future of this young woman with beautiful flowing hair. There are just so many possibilities!"
Name of Artist: Virginia Howell
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org panel of art professionals, Novice / For the Love of Painting
Judge's Comment: “This interesting landscape makes effective use of low-saturation complimentary colors and free-wheeling brushstrokes throughout. The clearing beyond the fence gives just a hint of sunlight, drawing the eye through the painting; the chaos of mud and reeds is calmed by specks of dappled light from treetops to the water below.”
Name of Artist: George Lewis
Award: BEST IN SHOW - Cash award $50 and free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org panel of art professionals, Novice / For the Love of Painting
Judge's Comment: "This painting exhibits a lovely, sweeping motion with the effect of light filtering through a sun-filled window, breaking prismatically into channels of shimmering colors, then returning to the source. The textural paint application creates a lively sense of movement across the canvas, integrating nicely through varying blocks of color, and supporting to the pleasing composition."
Name of Artist: Jane Hunt
Award: BEST IN SHOW - Cash award $250 and free promoted entry
Judge and Category: William Schneider, Representational Professional
Judge's Comment: "I love everything about this painting: great design; subtle, greyed harmony based on the yellow and violet complements; and totally believable rendering of the aspens!"
Name of Artist: Henry Bosak
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: Judge: William Schneider, Representational Professional
Judge's Comment: "This tight, photo-realistic painting is well outside of my personal wheelhouse but it is very well done! The subtle reflected light in the shadow to the left of the shaft’s connection sold me on this piece!"
Name of Artist: Valerie McMullen
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: Jane Davies, Abstract Professional
Judge's Comment: "Wide-ranging tonal values, depth, and controlled use of saturated color. Lovely variety of edges, line work, and color masses."
Name of Artist: Robin Williamson
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: William Schneider, Representational Professional
Judge's Comment: "Convincing sense of the bright spotlight on the dancing couple. There is a great amount of detail for such a small painting; I was particularly impressed by the drawing in the tiny hands of both dancers. Hands are challenging enough at life size; at less than a half inch in length these are masterful!"
Name of Artist: Mary Parkman
Award: BEST IN SHOW - Cash award $50 and free promoted entry
Judge and Category: Jane Davies, Abstract Professional
Judge's Comment: "Beachfront Property has some depth, beautiful expanse of neutrals, and a nicely understated use of bright colors. Lovely variety of edges, line work, and color masses."
Name of Artist: Monique Chartier
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org panel of art professionals, Novice / For the Love of Painting
Judge's Comment: “Daisies is strong in its simplicity and pleasing composition. Brushstrokes animate the petal forms while fuschia-wine and lime green complimentary hues infuse the flowers as they dance and sway against a pale, blue-gray sky.”
Name of Artist: Tom Shropshire
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org panel of art professionals, Abstract Professional
Judge's Comment: "This painting really does convey the feeling of being under water, and even more so, under ice, with its myriad cracks and bubbles trapped beneath imposing islands of translucent color. Looking up one see's light on the surface, but feels the challenge ahead. As in life, it's all about the journey as we strive toward the goal!"
Name of Artist: Tammy Staab
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: Jane Davies, Abstract Professional
Judge's Comment: "Incorporates a beautiful variety of values within the narrow range of blue. Strong in its contrast between the small areas of highly-contrasting blues towards the bottom, and the expanse of quiet space above."
Name of Artist: Lynne Rempel
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org panel of art professionals, Novice / For the Love of Painting
Judge's Comment: “Lovely portrait with the effect of contours in motion, an apt style for depicting a champion cyclist. Subtle warping of lines and shapes reminiscent of “Van Gogh” style, noting elements like the hair, hairband, and clothing and how these shapes flow and converge with surrounding landscape forms.”
Name of Artist: Марина (Marina Magdanova)
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org panel of art professionals, Novice / For the Love of Painting
Judge's Comment: “This painting really grabs my attention and makes me laugh. Love the rendering of the eyes, along with the nose and paws, all emphasizing unwavering persistence toward the goal at hand—free food. Most nature paintings show animals from a distance, and when depicted close up, usually it’s an arbitrary choice. In this case, there’s a good reason for the close-up view. This hungry racoon is pressed at the window looking for a handout, and if you or someone you know has ever fed wildlife, you know this look!"
