REPRESENTATIONAL PROFESSIONAL CATEGORY

Name of Artist: Rick J. Delanty
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: Anna Rose Bain, Representational Professional
Judge's Comment: "The mood and color harmony in this painting are what really drew me in, but when I read the description, I gained even more respect for Rick's accomplishment in this painting. He has such an experienced understanding of light and form in the natural world that he was able to contrive this scene using both reality and his imagination. To me that's the sign of a true artist!"
Name of Artist: Kim VanDerHoek
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: Anna Rose Bain, Representational Professional
Judge's Comment: "Kim's intentional choice of color as well as simplification and editing of shapes to create the mood for this piece is nothing short of impressive, especially for being an 'on the spotter.' Well done!"
Name of Artist: Jane Hunt
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: Anna Rose Bain, Representational Professional
Judge's Comment: "This beautiful painting has just the right amount of detail. I find that sunset and boat paintings can sometimes feel kitschy, but that is certainly not the case with this piece. Jane has masterfully created such interesting shapes with the cloud and the grouping of boats that I keep coming back to look at it."
Name of Artist: Deborah Tilby
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: Anna Rose Bain, Representational Professional
Judge's Comment: "I found the use of nearly horizontal lines and lost edges to be very interesting and inventive in what might have otherwise been an easily botched composition in the hands of a less experienced artist. Deborah handled the design beautifully and gives the viewer many points of entry into the painting as well as places to rest our gaze, such as the largest goose in the foreground and the larger masses of trees and water."
Name of Artist: Christine Columbo
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: Anna Rose Bain, Representational Professional
Judge's Comment: "A dramatic and soulful portrait with a subtle color harmony. I enjoy the juxtaposition of soft edges overall with sharp edges in the eyes and clothing."
Name of Artist: George F. Bodine
Award: Cash award and free promoted entry
Judge and Category: Anna Rose Bain, Representational Professional
Judge's Comment: "This painting intrigues me with its bold design and subtle narrative. I love George's masterful handling of the juicy paint and brushwork, and the way he directs your eye around the painting with a couple of razor sharp edges. Every square inch of a painting should be interesting to look at, and George has done just that with this piece. Bravo!"

ABSTRACT PROFESSIONAL CATEGORY

Name of Artist: Sam Buckland
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: Ellie Harold, Abstract Professional
Judge's Comment: "The freshly patterned image seems to communicate an intriguing hidden language that points to something beyond the ordinary sense of self."
Name of Artist: Carole Matthews
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: Ellie Harold, Abstract Professional
Judge's Comment: “The fiery reds and yellows remind me of Hans Hoffman’s 'color is light.' I like when a painting does what its title suggests.”
Name of Artist: NELYA AKIMOVA
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: Ellie Harold, Abstract Professional
Judge's Comment: "The use of monotones is courageous and I like how the value differences build a sense of space."
Name of Artist: Valerie McMullen
Award: BEST IN SHOW - Cash award and free promoted entry
Judge and Category: Ellie Harold, Abstract Professional
Judge's Comment: "This painting has a very satisfying design with just enough detail and marks to keep my interest, but it’s the sumptuous color that really grabs me."

NOVICE / FOR THE LOVE OF PAINTING CATEGORY

Name of Artist: Karen Burns
Award: BEST IN SHOW - Cash award and free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org panel of art professionals, Novice / For the Love of Painting
Judge's Comment: “This lovely still life painting succeeds on several levels. It is delightfully painterly but with plenty of thoughtfully rendered detail for the effect of realism. Balanced elements within a confined space give the illusion of filtered light and depth; there is pleasing use of complimentary color, with attention to color matching true to the scene and intentional variation of edges, sharp and focused to soft and receding.”
Name of Artist: Martina McAteer
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org panel of art professionals, Novice / For the Love of Painting
Judge's Comment: “The mind takes flight in this painting defined by expression of a concept through a series of intriguing symbols. One notices the centrally placed wings over the head; the dress, trapping of the present world, is carried away by a wafting balloon; cool light emanates from the outside, leading us out of darkness; a bird waiting to take flight sits upon the ‘flight’ of stairs. The figure takes one last look at the present world before it ascends to places beyond our imagining.”
Name of Artist: Loreta Hume
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org panel of art professionals, Novice / For the Love of Painting
Judge's Comment: “With the feeling of an exotic travel poster, this colorful, sketch-like painting invites us in with an upbeat portrait of a smiling patron. Moving through, we’re intrigued by the complex composition: rectangles and quadrangles frame the figure at different orientations creating an effective sensation of multilevel depth.”
Name of Artist: Ojars Bluzma
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org panel of art professionals, Novice / For the Love of Painting
Judge's Comment: “This vibrant still life easily convinces us of its realistic setting with true to life color and varied emphasis of form. Repetition of shapes in graduated sizes along a path creates a nice rhythm that draws and keeps our attention.”
Name of Artist: Jeanne Conant
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org panel of art professionals, Novice / For the Love of Painting
Judge's Comment: “This adventurous painting creates a impressionable experience for the viewer with its uncanny interplay of extreme angles, edges, and arcs. Bold color functions as the power source to an imaginary machine as it cycles through an array of tumbling geometric shapes.”
Name of Artist: Carolyn Wuyts
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org panel of art professionals, Novice / For the Love of Painting
Judge's Comment: “This portrait of a young girl conveys an introspective, meditative state of mind. Her peaceful gaze, carrying her to some far-off place, is captivating; her folded hands are placed as if in prayer; diffuse, cloud-like golden mid-tones filter through the canvas with the sensation of fleeting thoughts.”
