REPRESENTATIONAL PROFESSIONAL CATEGORY

Name of Artist: Gail Wegodsky
Award: BEST IN SHOW - Cash award and free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org Panel of Art Professionals, Representational Professional
Judge's Comment: "This painting springs to life by masterful expression of a vision through its wonderful execution: exceptional drawing, controlled edges, and thoughtful modeling within a wide tonal range. The sum is greater than the parts in a perfectly balanced composition that leads the eye to explore, from the figure to the wishbone. Beyond the technical aspects, we're drawn to this painting by its narrative. She emerges from the shadows to summon the powers of celestial judgement."
Name of Artist: Heather Arenas
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org Panel of Art Professionals, Representational Professional
Judge's Comment: "The idea of various stages of completion to depict presence of movement leaves us with a fascinating impression. The artist has conceived of an effective way to convey the constancy of motion in a group of flying birds. The central figure with the "small offering," anchors the scene like the hub of a wheel as we imagine the birds' takeoff and landing faster than the eye can see."
Name of Artist: George F. Bodine
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org Panel of Art Professionals, Representational Professional
Judge's Comment: "The viewer instantly feels the quandary of the subject. What is the chef pondering? Expert painterly rendering, striking use of contrasting hues, distinctive composition with bold, centrally placed cross-like design, and skillful use of perspective are all aspects supporting the painting's compelling narrative which dominates our thoughts."
Name of Artist: Nancy Calder
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org Panel of Art Professionals, Representational Professional
Judge's Comment: "Superior rendering of detail brings this composition to life, compelling us to believe that such a scene actually exists. Unlikely birds grab our attention and we reflect on the broken eggshells (lower left), imagining twittering hatchlings hidden in the nest. Are the painting's elements random, or is there a story behind the collective objects: symbols of time, life and death, knowledge, health, wealth, past and future?"
Name of Artist: Monika Harmund Csanyi
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org Panel of Art Professionals, Representational Professional
Judge's Comment: “A massive, rising column of clouds looms over the land. We admire its magnificence, but also hope we’re not in its path! Aspects like skillful rendering, refined treatment of edges, naturalistic hues, and details such as the streak of sunlight cast across the landscape collaborate for an overall impression evoking the duality of forces in life.”
Name of Artist: RD Mitchell
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org Panel of Art Professionals, Representational Professional
Judge's Comment: "Mythical, dreamlike qualities characterize this painting. The central subject, the bull, transforms into an immutable symbol of power impervious to the perils of nature. The stylistic rendering, luminous color effects, and receding atmospheric treatment beautifully frames the subject and commands our attention."

ABSTRACT PROFESSIONAL CATEGORY

Name of Artist: Ryan
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org Panel of Art Professionals, Abstract Professional
Judge's Comment: "In spite of the artist's description, the streaming shape conveys a flag-like symbol, but ripped and torn throughout. We imagine a nation (our own?) fractured by politics and socio-economic conflict. A sense of violent expression emanates from the banner's periphery, conjuring the notion of factions at war. Perhaps we're reading in too much—or, it is a likely impression of the viewer."
Name of Artist: Peach McComb
Award: BEST IN SHOW - Cash award and free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org Panel of Art Professionals, Abstract Professional
Judge's Comment: "This striking abstract summons an intriguing play of color in strong, faceted layers, resulting in a nice illusion of depth, and distinctive pathways for the eye to explore within its fluid composition. Beyond the canvas, the imagery evokes a sense of story and mystery, leaving a lingering vision in our minds well after we look away."
Name of Artist: Mark Seewall
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org Panel of Art Professionals, Abstract Professional
Judge's Comment: "We're puzzled by the thoughts this painting generates, that nature mysteriously reflects back on itself through repeating patterns, encompassing similar, smaller forms, over and over, on to infinity. It is a familiar yet confounding concept belonging to the realm of fractal geometry."
Name of Artist: Tom Shropshire
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org Panel of Art Professionals, Abstract Professional
Judge's Comment: "One feels the sensation of fields of motion across glass or through space, with the effect of root-like structures reaching and anchoring into masses of amorphous shapes. This is interesting in light of the artist's concept of races of man mingling and merging and creates a sort of visual model for a hypothesis called 'punctuated equilibrium' — evolutionary development marked by isolated episodes of rapid speciation between long periods of little or no change."
Name of Artist: Leah Dockrill
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org Panel of Art Professionals, Abstract Professional
Judge's Comment: “True to the painting’s goal, the viewer may feel the presence of ancestors who faced the unknown with few tools and no modern conveniences; the looming dark patch creates the impression of a figure emerging from the distant past, and somehow amplifies our awareness of dangers faced by those who, despite daunting challenges, survived.”
Name of Artist: Ospennikov Illya
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org Panel of Art Professionals, Abstract Professional
Judge's Comment: "Peering into this kaleidoscope of amorphous shapes and colors, mythical creatures and cryptic figures magically emerge; scattered musings of the mind gradually piece the puzzle-like elements together, unifying the narrative with new thoughts to ponder."

Honorable Mention:

Fiesta/Leftovers by Laran

Full Moon II-M by Veryal Zimmerman

NOVICE / FOR THE LOVE OF PAINTING CATEGORY

Name of Artist: Jason John Phillips
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org Panel of Art Professionals, Novice / For the Love of Painting
Judge's Comment: "This is a show-stopper of a portrait for its over-the-top, intense facial expression. The underlying drawing and rendering is stylistically distinctive and intriguing by its precision—use of exaggerated tones and over-emphasized details add to the viewer's sense of the subject's precarious emotional state."
Name of Artist: Maria-Victoria Checa
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org Panel of Art Professionals, Novice / For the Love of Painting
Judge's Comment: "An interesting construction of relational elements creates an unusual visual effect. Objects project a sense of mass and volume simply by position of angles and curves. The artist mentions the ocean and one has the feeling of a boat inexplicably collapsing and folding inward."
Name of Artist: Nancy Price
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org Panel of Art Professionals, Novice / For the Love of Painting
Judge's Comment: "Colorful landscape maintains visual interest from bottom to top, front to back. Three distinct color blocks —foreground, mid-ground, and background/sky—defy isolation and link together through a series of diagonal lines moving up through the canvas, creating a nice effect of perspective and depth."
Name of Artist: Jong Lee
Award: BEST IN SHOW - Cash award and free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org Panel of Art Professionals, Novice / For the Love of Painting
Judge's Comment: "A truly spellbinding portrait! The upward gaze of the woman conveys that of the supplicant entreating the answer to a prayer. The beautifully executed drawing, rich tonal range, and realistic rendering of textures provide a solid foundation for the painting's most important appeal: the expression of a unique mood with profound emotion."
Name of Artist: Karen Burns
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org Panel of Art Professionals, Novice / For the Love of Painting
Judge's Comment: "Nicely composed still life exhibits pleasing tonal transitions and conveys a sense of tranquility. An easy visual arc, from the lock up and over to the fruit right of the pitcher is formed by highlights in between—bright areas of the fruit, pitcher, edges of leaves, to the glint of metal on the lock combine to lead the eye."
Name of Artist: Jeanne Conant
Award: FINALIST - Free promoted entry
Judge and Category: PaintingContest.Org Panel of Art Professionals, Novice / For the Love of Painting
Judge's Comment: "In this arresting portrayal of a wild horse, the 'wildness' of the creature is well depicted. Carefully observed and drawn, the directional flow of the mane along the body and back leaning, upright stance of the animal suggests its ponderous mass and potential for abrupt, threatening action."
