Hissy, the Koala was one of the fortunate creatures rescued from the huge bush fires - which are an annual event in Victoria Australia.  Her front paw was badly burned, however she managed to get around well, and this image - she was backing down the tree whilst holding her paw.  She was in the safe hands of the Healesville Sanctuary.

I photographed and sketched her on site and completed this image in my studio.

Scratchboard and Ampersand Ink for colour.  Original sketches and photographs by Jan.

Judge's Comment: "This work captures the bravery of the lovely fellow, Hissy. The koala population has been devastated over the last hundred years, through urbanisation, fires and other habitat destruction. So it’s wonderful to see art celebrating Australia’s wildlife. The painting is beautifully rendered, demonstrating effective use of contrast between the subject and the background."
