The Gold RoadSave Favorites
This is a unique and original encaustic wax painting on card. Encaustic paintings are produced with a painting iron and hot wax. The iron is the painting tool and produces all the detail in this picture. The hot waxes create wonderful vibrant colours. The original and prints are available to buy through my website and etsy shop.
This landscape is inspired by the American west and the gold rush era. The vast stretching desert flanked by harsh dark rocks, frames a pale, dusty road, which leads the prospector (and the viewer) deeper into the wilderness in search of gold. The bright orange of the landscape suggests the harsh desert sun.
The swirling, dusty sky was produced with a rubbing away of the wax from the shiny card surface. The rough scrub foliage in the foreground was produced by lifting the painting iron off the surface of the card in dabbing motions. A hotplate was also used in this painting to produce the depth of colour in the background.
