Description

This cougar is one of the rescued big cats at Turpentine Creek sanctuary in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Even though my painting does not depict it, the habitat she lives in is large with grass, trees,  enrichment and vet services. The animals there are never used for entertainment but instead are respected and allowed to live out the rest of their lives being as free as possible. I try to get there at least once a year and have painted many of their magnificent residents. They accept and depend on donations for the wonderful work that is done for the animals, the website is www.turpentinecreek.org.

Judge and Category: Nancy Calder, Representational, Professional
Height (inches): 24
Judge's Comment: "The magnificence of this cougar has been lovingly captured. The paws are relaxed, the eyes are both focused and calm and the fur has been skillfully rendered. The sunlight coming from behind the animal, glows through the right ear and then falls softly down it’s right side and along the right foreleg and paw and spills over to just the tip of the left paw—beautiful. The considerable attention to edges gives solid perspective and depth to the composition."
