    Description

    Wolves play to!

The method I used was to firstly draw in the pup with charcoal, then paint him with Daniel Smith WC on the smooth surface of the Ampersand Claybord working, when dry, then take a craft knife scratch the colors back the colour back (same technique as Ampersand Scratchboard).

    Why this subject:
Over the years, I have developed a huge love for the stunning African Wolf (Painted Dog).  As a creature that is misunderstood and catch up in the struggle of life in losing its space.  This subject is one I have been working on for some time, and with the reference of one of Nicholas Dyer's stunning photographs and with his permission, I used his beautiful photograph as reference.  When I was working in Africa,  I used to see these wolves roam freely in large packs and found them amazing and since then have read, visited the wild packs and watch them for years in zoos.
To catch that spirit and playfulness shown within the pack was special. The pack at the Melbourne Open Range Zoo, beautiful that they are, but confined within boundaries, they were great but the animals are smaller and tame.
However this little pup had the look, mischievous and guilty, and Nic had captured it so well.  I so dearly wanted to show this to the viewer, they are just like any youngster - they like to have fun!  I believe that I captured the playfulness and his soul is conveyed within this painting.

I am building up my artworks for my forthcoming exhibition in June 2020, and this little fellow will be on show with many of his zoo relatives as scratchboard art and watercolor works.  All proceeds of my exhibition will go to the Foundation for the African Wolf, they are endangered and need help. This is the first time I have used another photographers pic, so a huge thank you to Nic Dyer.
