Having used a wide variety of art tools, I find scratchboard the most satisfying. I am intrigued by the subtractive sculpture approach in 2-dimensional form; scratching away India ink to reveal soft white clay underneath. Various tools and use of pressure give birth to a myriad of detailed values.

This Icelandic horse roams free and this particular shot caught him running toward the camera.

Judge's Comment: "Stunning scratch board rendering of a wild horse is beautifully detailed and compositionally exciting. Areas of light and dark almost magically denote not just a sense of the subject's color but also dimension and depth in an otherwise monochromatic painting."
