Description

"ELEGIA" is a kind of elegy, or tribute to ancient peoples, in all parts of the world, who were cave dwellers. They left markings and images on the walls of caves where they sheltered. This work was inspired specifically by cave markings in New Mexico. But we observed them as well in Arizona and Utah. The artwork is not an attempt to duplicate or appropriate any specific culture. It is only inspired by what I saw at such sites.

Judge's Comment: “True to the painting’s goal, the viewer may feel the presence of ancestors who faced the unknown with few tools and no modern conveniences; the looming dark patch creates the impression of a figure emerging from the distant past, and somehow amplifies our awareness of dangers faced by those who, despite daunting challenges, survived.”
