    Description

The Bison: from 30 million to 325 (1884) to 500,000 (today)

Last year, the bison was chosen as America’s first national mammal, joining the bald eagle as a symbol of America.

There are approximately 530,000 buffaloes (bison), on private and public lands and roughly 15,000 in the wild.  Nearly hunted to extinction, the importance of this majestic creature in the history of the Native American people and America itself cannot be undersold. Respected and revered, the bison provided both sustenance as well as warmth to the ancient Native American ancestors that called the west home. Once teaming, the American Buffalo has its rightful place in the prairies as well as the story of America.
