This painting is important to me as an artist, because it is one of the series I often get obsessed with.  It came from a quick, cheap camera photo and a memory of hurrying along an alley in the dark.  Years ago, I became fascinated with the idea of looking in, and of an overall light quality that would infuse a painting. I have done many variations of this piece, both in composition, the window, but ESPECIALLY the light.  I think I'm done.

Judge's Comment: "The viewer instantly feels the quandary of the subject. What is the chef pondering? Expert painterly rendering, striking use of contrasting hues, distinctive composition with bold, centrally placed cross-like design, and skillful use of perspective are all aspects supporting the painting's compelling narrative which dominates our thoughts."
