like to mix realistic and abstract painting, I think it really resonates like an echo to our current world. A mix of beauty and chaos. Beauty that remains, eternal, despite the chaos.
I usually paint the face and the hands first in a very realistic academic manner, inspired by the great painters from the end of the 19th century (Bouguereau, Sergent, Durant). Then starts a long journey where I will put and remove painting in successive layers for the background. A background that will at some places overlap the face, and at some other places merge with the portrait. It usually takes me a lot of time until I am fully satisfied with the overall composition. There must be a sort of harmony, the face has to well integrate the background and the background must echo the portrait in some ways.
For this one the funny thing is that in the reference photo I took from the model, the hat was actually black. I first painted it in black and then had this idea to change it into red, for the better I think.
