Description

Driftwood is one of my favorite subjects to paint. The elements of realism and abstraction merge. To get access to the many pieces of driftwood, I kayak to this local deserted island known as Sandy Point. I notice that there is less and less of the old breakwaters and the old wharf is no longer there. The ice, tides and winter months has taken it's tole. Even the driftwood gets moved around a lot over there but it all makes for new and interesting shapes. Nature always thinks about what I can't come up with. She is such a great inspiration.

Judge's Comment: "This is a rich painting. The treatment of the various grays and repeating shapes might be tedious in other artist’s hands, but not here. There’s life in those stones and driftwood! The subtle, low angle light and atmosphere speak of the sea without having the sea in the painting. The raven seems to be bracing against a morning breeze while waiting for the sun’s warmth. A real sense of place."
