Inspired by my daughter's participation in Bass Pro Shop's Springfield, MO marathon, I setup to paint a plein air watercolor of thousands of runners coming toward me. A chaotic scene at best, that proved to be a tremendous challenge! Inclement weather wouldn't allow for more than a cursory effort to develop the story.
I put the painting away for over a year, finally pulling it out of the closet to ponder its fate. With watercolor failing to give the desired results I decided to go mixed media by building upon the foundation with oils.
I wrestled with this for another year trying to coax my vision from the canvas. Regardless of my effort to tighten up, I couldn't get there. It was only at the insistence of several artist friends to stop before I ruined it, that I put it away again. It has been three years since I began and one year since I last saw it. I now am willing to call it done and offer "Go Your Distance" for public critique.
In the end it has a "Neiman-esque" appearance, not needing detail to convey the story to the viewer.
