I have a favorite place that I keep returning to. The place features rocks, water and lots of plants, trees and fauna. I love the rocks and have been trying to paint the rocks for some time. I did this painting plein air then at home. The success of this one made me feel pretty good. I'm so glad it did because the whole area has since undergone  a lot of changes by road widening-diminishing the naturalness of this special place. I'll still work painting rocks but will need to find new areas.

Judge's Comment: "This painting succeeds not only in creating the illusion of a thick rock wall, but also in hinting about what lies on the other side. It partially blocks our view into a strange land of mystery and aurora, intriguing us with its power. Well placed gradient tones and sprawling watercolor stains unexpectedly add to our sense of real 3-D wall that is compact and impenetrable. What lies beyond? And, are we kept in—or out?"
