“The Tempest” was inspired by the beautiful rolling hills surrounding the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. I completed this painting in my studio following a 3-day painting trip to the Ozarks, throughout which there were intermittent storms in the region, resulting in several lively and adventurous plein air painting sessions!
I relished the opportunity to complete several plein air studies of the area as I attempted to capture the distinct atmospheric qualities and transitions in lighting as the changes occurred with the coming and going of the storms. When I completed this larger painting in my studio, the plein air studies from my trip were invaluable during the entire process, enabling me to capture the dynamic sky and dramatic atmosphere that I observed in nature.
