    Description

I love painting people!  I love abstraction! I've been pondering ways to intersect the two for years.  The model in this painting is an artist friend.  He is a thoughtful, forthright person with incredible talent. I was so happy with the mood and the pose that I wanted to take it further --- and try to meld some abstraction with it.  My initial attempts were cowardly and stilted.  Finally I just decided to go for broke, obliterating parts of the painting.  Many sessions of painting that were then completely wiped off or repainted.  It was scary, but exhilarating! Looking forward to taking it further! Abstraction intervening on reality --- hence the name "Intervention".

Judge's Comment: "This painting tells us a story and makes us wonder. The face is beautifully painted and he wears a reflective expression. The title Intervention suggests a pattern represented by the abstraction overplayed on the figure that the subject is trying to break through or transcend. Could it be somewhat representative of the artists frame of mind in trying trying to intersect two very different styles, abstraction and realism, and in doing so transcend them both?"
