    July 2018 Judge: Jason Sacran

“When a painting not only grabs me from the beginning but continues to grow on me every time I see it, I know it is special. This painting did that for me throughout the process of judging. It has a beautiful atmospheric analogues cool color scheme with great spots and areas of unexpected marks along with a variety of tactile and visual textures that had me exploring each time I came back. The painting also made me think and want to know more. I actually went and read Nyle’s statement he wrote about the painting. Overall, in my opinion, this was a powerful effort by the artist. Congratulations, Nyle!"

    Name of Artist Mikhail Solovev
Monthly Judge's Comment: This is a beautifully executed figure, done with the skill of an old master, but with a contemporary hand and story. Great Job, Mikhail.

Name of Artist Mason Mansung Kang
Monthly Judge's Comment: This is a very impressive landscape with a mix of controlled skill, and an intuitive ability to let the paint be itself. The color harmony and design is superb. Great painting, Mason.
    Name of Artist Jim Geisinger
Monthly Judge's Comment: Striking subject, nice subtleties in skin tones, and overall beautiful painting. Way to go, Jim.
    Name of Artist Shana Levenson
Monthly Judge's Comment: What a beautiful concept for a painting, well thought out and skillfully executed. Shana has what it takes to fully express what is inside her, and she is doing work at a level that most cannot accomplish. This was another painting that made me investigate further. I had to know what was up with that empty space and I am glad I read Shana’s statement; I can absolutely relate. And maybe in some ways, even if not a parent, anyone can relate to this - as I believe life seems to be full of empty spaces and butterflies in so many parallel ways. If nothing else, we have all been the butterflies to someone. Bravo...Beautiful work, Shana.
    Name of Artist Brian Sindler
Monthly Judge's Comment: Nocturne Whitfield Rd. had me, even as a thumbnail. In fact, it was so close to taking the Best of Show that I almost feel I should apologize to Brian. This painting is a great example of less is more, as Brian is a master of simplicity. The economy of shape and mass along with the subtlety of tonal color shifts are beautiful. And how he made that design work so well – the bright window light on the right and how he balanced it with all the dark subtle color masses around it. In my opinion, a brilliant painting.
    Name of Artist Craig Pursley
Monthly Judge's Comment: It’s not easy posing and creating an interesting situation and concept with a figure. I thought this was a great pose and design and loved the cast shadows in the background. Really nice job, Craig.
Name of Artist Morgan Samuel Price
Monthly Judge's Comment: Honestly I passed this one up a few times, before further inspection gave me a better appreciation. It takes a dang good painter to do this outdoors and to trust herself enough to not just adhere to a set “rules.” Rather, Morgan went for the moment and let her intuition (which comes from years of experience) guide her. The cat being close to the edge (the wheel actually does hit the edge) and in the middle of the canvas, connected to the bird house that looks like a bright arrow pointing up to that continuation of windows, which takes you away from that beautiful chaos of the foreground is intriguing. Morgan’s work makes one want to investigate further. Whether it be spots of light, tree leaves creating dancing cast shadows, or even a cat - Morgan has you looking into the camouflage of everyday to find what she hides for you.
    Name of Artist Michael Wood
Monthly Judge's Comment: As intriguing as the painting of musicians lost in their music, is the musicality of this painting itself. There is a beautiful rhythm in Michael’s light and color placement decisions, like music notes across a page. Beautiful painting, Michael.
    Name of Artist Chris Krupinski
Monthly Judge's Comment: Wow! Not just this painting, but Chris’ entire body of works/entries are so impressive. It wasn’t a matter of if Chris was getting an award as much as which piece. I ultimately chose “Just A Pear” because I loved the centralized pear and radiating patterns leading to and beside it. Great color, especially temperature and value sensibilities. Congrats, Chris!
    Name of Artist Deborah Tilby
Monthly Judge's Comment: Great design and I enjoy that the prominent boat is placed in the middle with all the boats in the upper proximity giving them prominence. Nice color and great execution. Deborah is a killer painter.
    Name of Artist Patrick Saunders
Monthly Judge's Comment: What can I say? This guy is pretty darn good. Nice atmosphere and light quality, great intuitive drawing ability and composition. I love the way Patrick approached this piece and you can see his spirit in the work. There is something raw and fresh about Patrick’s work, as if you could see his beginning in his finish. He shows you his struggle and gives you glimpses into his process. Like I said, this guy is pretty darn good.

    Show Statement:
It was a true honor to be the July judge for this wonderful competition. It is always a humbling experience to go through many great pieces and have to choose a few from so many deserving. I took this job seriously, taking several days going through each painting, blowing them up on my mac, closely inspecting them, and trying to give them the attention that they deserved before making eliminations. Or rather, I should say graduating paintings to the next round. It took me a few rounds before coming up with the final twelve. In the end, I believe I made the right decisions for my convictions. There were several that were left out that could’ve easily been in this line up – another day, another judge. I wish you all the best. And, a big congratulations to the winners! — Jason Sacran
