    May 2018 Judge: Susan Faust

“This is a beautiful painting. It speaks to me so softly and yet there is a real strength in the composition, line and values that keep me engaged in the piece. There is a beautiful simplicity with the misty background and real strength in the detail that reveals the ropes, shadow and details of the boats. There is a simple and yet strong abstract quality to the shapes and their relationship to the rather simple large spaces. I can see and feel the artist in this work. It truly conveys her feeling about the place and what it was that drew her to express and translate it. Deborah-- I love this piece. Your work has such a depth of sensitivity and beauty to it. Congratulations."

    Name of Artist Sandra Burm
Monthly Judge's Comment: I love the abstract quality of this painting. The composition is stellar, the colors, texture and values all interest me and keep me interested. The cars are great renderings of cars but when you squint and look at this you forget the subject matter and see this lovely rhythm of value, color and line. Those red taillights and that dark triangle at the top are icing on the cake. It is a really nice piece.
    Name of Artist John Buxton
Monthly Judge's Comment: John -- you called this a "green attempt". I must say that your really nailed it! I really feel this moonlight. It is a haunting painting in so many ways. Not only is there this mood of moonlight but there is this mysterious story that you show us just a piece of. It intrigues me and yet I feel like I don't need to know more. I like that it is a moment and that I am invited into the experience of it. Aside from the story and mood I really love the quality of the brushwork and the painterly approach of the work. You nailed the colors, values and you did it all well. A lovely and interesting painting.
    Name of Artist Alan Wylie
Monthly Judge's Comment: Great composition combined with shapes and pattern of different values and colors really make this painting successful. I fine it intriguing and I really enjoy lingering and exploring this world. There is an intriguing rhythm to the details which contrast so well with what the artist chose not to disclose. It is a really strong and interesting piece that invites you to linger while this sleeping man is totally unaware of you!

    Name of Artist Patrick Saunders
Monthly Judge's Comment: This is a lovely, confident piece that is such a great example of a unified palette. It has such a great feeling of a moment in time. I love the transparency of the stains and the small brush strokes of more opaque paint. This is s a direct and strong painting with a beautiful, luminous feeling.
Name of Artist Morgan Samuel Price
Monthly Judge's Comment: This is such a lovely painting. It feels like I am there with the painter experiencing that beautiful light and air. I feel that the artist was so totally engaged in the experience of the boat and the water and the day. It is not just a description of a boat but a lovely dance of colors and shapes. It is a wonderful composition with those rigging lines going off of the top and the piers that sort of cradle the boat. These colors are clean and crisp and fresh. Wow this is a stunning piece Morgan!
    Name of Artist Jason Sacran
Monthly Judge's Comment: Right off the bat I have to say that I love this painting! It isn't the subject so much as it is that I am getting to see into the mind of the artist and to hear his unique voice. I always want to see something that I haven't seen before when I look at paintings and this one hit the mark. Jason took huge risks here, not settling for a description of a place but instead creating a mood and a translation of what he saw and felt. It is beautiful in its abstraction of the landscape. The textures are so exciting with so much variation. Wonderful contrasts of value and color. Great piece Jason!
Name of Artist George F. Bodine
Monthly Judge's Comment: This is a dynamite painting by an amazingly accomplished painter. The suggestion of all that detail in the back behind the figure is rendered with pieces of colors and brushstrokes. The values choices are fabulous and then you add into the equation the lighter value shapes of the roofs and awning and it is really like magic. The colors are fabulous and the description of the figure is gorgeous. George- this is a fabulous little painting!
    Name of Artist Brian Sindler
Monthly Judge's Comment: Well, what can you say? This is such a successful little painting! A strong confident use of color and value and just the right balance of detail and open space. I feel like I am there and held in that view.
    Name of Artist Shana Levenson
Monthly Judge's Comment: This is a beautifully painted piece, and unique because Shana took a chance and decided on a very challenging direction with the subject matter. There is no doubt about the skill involved in applying the paint and designing this piece. She nailed it! The values and color and description are gorgeous but beyond that was the vision of the overall design. It feels to me that a piece of the artist went into every brushstroke and decision made in completing this work. It is beautiful.
    Name of Artist Spencer Meagher
Monthly Judge's Comment: I so enjoyed the experience of this painting. It just gave me the feeling that Spencer was completely immersed in the shapes and colors of those tractors. This painting makes me smile. It has a rather lighthearted and easy feeling to it. Those big purple shapes in front are so bold and confident and lead right into the interesting shapes and details of color. I love the drawing in this painting as well as the painter's application of paint. It has a great abstract design quality.
    Name of Artist Marcos Rey
Monthly Judge's Comment: Wow is really all I have to say about this painting. It is so beautifully executed and conceived. The mood and power of the piece are palpable. The painting of the skirt is as amazing and as interesting to me as the face. It is a powerful composition and a sensitive portrait. Lovely.
