    1st Place, Grand Prize Winner:

Hillside Relic by Brian LaSaga: “This work is very original with a strong composition and a skillful capturing of the snow in its various different states. The “flat” light of the sky is nicely handled. The artist has done an excellent job of taking what seems so ordinary and elevating it to beautiful." — Kathy Duley, Final Juror of Awards

    Name of Artist: Brian LaSaga
Judge's Comment: "Burrrrr.... everything about this painting invites us into the landscape, but you better have the right cold weather gear. First, you have to ease your way across the ice, circumnavigate the boulder, scramble up the cliff, inch over to the slightly ajar cabin door before slipping inside (finding no relief from the cold) only to realize you don't have the keys. Such is the narrative of this expertly rendered painting. This scene may not be the place we want to vacation, but Brian's skill and choice of element placement lead us in to crunch around in the snow and linger long enough to freeze our toes."
Final Juror of Awards Comment: "This work is very original with a strong composition and a skillful capturing of the snow in its various different states. The “flat” light of the sky is nicely handled. The artist has done an excellent job of taking what seems so ordinary and elevating it to beautiful."
    Name of Artist: Deborah Tilby
Judge's Comment: "Design is always triumphant in the contest for capturing the eye. The balance and flow of the subject matter flows along in this powerful piece. The artist was also careful to minimize some elements which could have destroyed the work; light, drawing and other traits also impress."
Final Juror of Awards Comment: "I was drawn to all of Deborah’s entries—there is something very intriguing about her work and her use of light as well as “empty” space. The unique perspective and strong composition of this work pulls the viewer in. Once again, the artist takes the ordinary and reveals the beauty to the viewer."
    Name of Artist: Heather Arenas
Judge's Comment: "This piece caught my eye from far away—the over-all value design is spectacular. I also love the variety of texture, from the relatively smooth background, to the blocked-in skin tones, to the hard vertical lines of the clothes."
Final Juror of Awards Comment: "The artist has captured the light nicely—you can feel 'Red' soaking up the sun. Just a brush stroke here and there conveys the brilliance of the light. The strong vertical orientation of this painting is balanced by the looseness of the brush strokes—a pleasing combination of realism and abstraction."

Show Statement, Final Juror of Awards: "I really enjoyed doing this (in spite of the challenges) and loved seeing all the talent and discovering new artists as well as seeing some old friends! All of the winners were new to me." — Kathy Duley
