Libby Caldwell began painting portraits professionally in 1976. Today she is known for her unique style and mastery of genre paintings, focusing on narrative and allegorical subjects.
Libby received her first formal art training during high school under an instructor from the Slade School of Art in England. During her college years, she sought additional training in Spain at a small academy, studying oil painting in the tradition of the Old Masters and Spanish Impressionists.
Libby’s fascination with portraiture and its many varied aspects has taken her from formal portraiture to her current interest in capturing the moments of everyday life. She has exhibited and sold independent work in watercolor, oil, pastels, mixed media, ceramics, and mosaic. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in England, Spain, Texas, and most recently in both Sedona and Phoenix, Arizona.
"The Dream" by Libby Caldwell.
Libby previously served as a City Commissioner on the Sedona Art and Culture Commission (commissioner for art in education). She created an arts immersion program which took part of the humanities curriculum at the high school and used the arts as a learning vehicle to transport the students to “another time or place.” The program continued in the Sedona school district from 2001 through 2015.
She also created and has been teaching a journaling workshop since 2007. The workshop is about engaging all the senses in recording the moments of life. This workshop is currently offered as part of the Sedona Art Retreats at the Sedona Arts Center and is also offered privately.
