Rules - Terms of Agreement

The Gateway International Painting Competition is an online, juried painting competition with cash award to monthly to Best in Show. Promotes paintings created in traditional media. Proceeds to develop and send art kits to students in places lacking access to art supplies and art education.

ELIGIBILITY: This online painting competition is open to painters world wide who are at least 18 years of age. One registration/membership per artist.

DEADLINES: This online competition runs for 12 months, with each month conducted as a separate monthly competition. Each monthly competition begins on the first day of the month ends at 11:59 pm the last day of the month, Arizona, USA time. Finalists are selected each month with ONE Best in Show Cash (USD) winner PER CATEGORY, PER MONTH (PLEASE SEE THE PROSPECTUS FOR INFORMATION ABOUT CATEGORIES AND CASH AWARDS). Finalists and Best in Show winners are announced on or shortly after the 20th of the following month. Winners are paid promptly following winner announcement. Artworks that miss a monthly deadline will be entered into the following month.

REGISTRATION FEE/ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP: New Registration requires an annual membership fee. Membership at PaintingContest.Org gives the Artist a chance to enter as often as desired (each painting entered requiring an additional entry fee as each painting entry receives it's own dedicated presentation and Artist's contact page). Following registration, the Artist may log in, purchase a painting entry package consisting of one or more entries, and then enter a painting or paintings. (If you are a renewing member, annual renewal is only $15, a 40% discount).

THREE CATEGORIES OF ENTRY (same rules and entry fees apply to all categories):

1. REPRESENTATIONAL, PROFESSIONAL: (realism, impressionism, etc.)
Details: Up to 6 Finalists each month, including ONE monthly Best in Show winner. Multiple Jurors: PaintingContest.Org along with the current month's professional artist judges.

2. ABSTRACT, PROFESSIONAL: (abstract, expressionism, surrealism, other nonrepresentational, etc.)
Details: Up to 6 Finalists each month, including ONE monthly Best in Show winner. Multiple Jurors: PaintingContest.Org along with the current month's professional artist judges.

3. NOVICE and/or FOR THE LOVE OF PAINTING: Any style painting. For our purposes, this is anyone who is new or returning to painting from a long absence, from those just beginning to those in a developing stage, and artists who are learning, or hoping to develop a career in painting. IMPORTANT: EXCLUDES artists who are recognized full time professional artists or artists who are represented.
Details: Up to 6 Finalists each month, including ONE monthly Best in Show winner. Multiple Jurors: PaintingContest.Org along with the current month's professional artist judges.

PAINTING ENTRY FEE: The entry fee for each painting is $10 for a regular entry, or $15 for a "special promoted" entry (or less if you have purchased a multi-entry discount package). This fee is separate from the annual membership registration fee. You can enter as many paintings each month as you wish and you may enter the same painting again, as long as it has not already been selected as a finalist. The painting entry fee is required each time the same painting in entered again in another month — unless that painting is a Best In Show finalist winner, in which case it can not be entered again.

EACH ENTRY PERMANENTLY DATE STAMPED: The painting entry time is date stamped to Arizona USA time and displays on the page with each painting. Each painting receives an actual server-time date stamp which can not be changed due to the fact that this is an official competition awarding cash prizes. Therefore, each separate entry is considered part of the legal and historical record. Date stamped entries may not be moved by the artist to a different monthly category; to do so would disqualify them, as the original date stamp will always display.

REPEATED ENTRIES: The same painting may be submitted again in future months UNLESS that painting has already been selected as Best In Show. If you submit the same work in another month, the entry fee still applies. Since each month represents a new competition, the previously entered painting must again be entered all over again, image uploaded, and entry paid to receive the new monthly competition date stamp. As mentioned above, each monthly competition ends in the final minutes and seconds of each month, Arizona time. (To confirm the time if submitting a painting in the final hours, type in Googe search: "time in Arizona USA.")

PLEASE NOTE: If the artist misses the monthly deadline and the date stamp on a painting entry shows that the painting is actually entered in first day of the new month, the painting will be moved to that month's category, consistent with the date stamp.

TRADITIONAL PAINTING MEDIA ACCEPTED (NO PHOTOGRAPHY OR DIGITAL ART): Paintings must be created using physical and traditional media including but not limited to: oil, watercolor, pastel, pencil, or acrylic. Paintings may be "mixed media" as long as they use a combination of traditional painting/drawing media and are meant to be viewed from one direction as a 2-D (two dimensional) creation.

ENTRY SPECIFICATIONS - PAINTING IMAGE SIZE: Entries should consist of a quality photograph of your actual, physical painting submitted as a digital jpeg file. (This means that the file extension should be ".jpg" such as in this example: "picture.jpg"). The file should also be under 3 megabytes (reason: for fast loading online). Following registration, you can upload your file using our online entry form found when you log in and land automatically on the "Add Painting" page. This page leading to the entry form is only visible to registered artists who are logged in. In addition to the file size (kilobytes, or K, or megabytes, M) we also highly recommend that the pixel dimensions are less than 1200 pixels on the longest side, but over 500 pixels on the shortest side. This is so the entire photo can be viewed on a computer screen by the judge. And don't worry about dpi or "dots per inch" because it will automatically become whatever the computer screen displays, usually 72 dpi, after it is uploaded. If you have trouble preparing and uploading your digital photos, you can alternately email us a high quality photograph of your painting. Our graphic designer can also size and optimize your image for you if need it (optional additional fee—PayPal invoice sent in advance of work performed).

Entries qualifying for finalist status must be photographs of actual, physical paintings (no digital or computer art, please).

*** ATTENTION ARTISTS! Photos of your paintings must not include picture frames, borders, or views of your studio or any background area outside of the actual image. The only exception is if the frame of your painting is actually part of your painting, or if multiple canvases constitute one work to be viewed in total (for example, as in display of a triptych). Not following these rules raises the chance your painting will be passed over by the judge in the competition. Poor quality photos such as those with the surface of the painting tilted at an angle, portions of the painting out of focus, or poor, uneven lighting will not be accepted. For artists seeking information about photographing a painting, there excellent demonstrations on YouTube—just type in the YouTube search, "how to photograph a painting."

SOLD PAINTINGS: Paintings that the artist has sold or paintings that have won awards in other shows are permitted to be shown in this competition.

SELLING FROM PAINTINGCONTEST.ORG: Artists ALWAYS keep 100% of sales of their paintings through PaintingContest.Org. If the Artist sells paintings through this website, the Artist (or his or her representative) agrees to complete and manage the sale, including prompt communicating with the buyer, shipping to the buyer in proper packaging to protect against product damage, and collecting shipping and taxes from the buyer. The artist further agrees if they are selling a particular painting as "an original," that particular painting will never be offered as an original again (there is only one original per painting!), but they may sell any number of prints so long there is no misrepresentation to the buyer regarding stated numbers or limits on print reproductions or editions. This painting competition and exhibition does not place itself between seller and buyer, but strives to maintain the highest reputation to promote all its member artists to the highest standards possible.

AGE OF PAINTING: Paintings entered must have been completed in the past five years. Older paintings shall be considered ineligible for finalist positions and prizes.

SALE OF ARTWORK POSTED: Artist has the option to indicate if an artwork is for sale, or not for sale. This painting contest does NOT receive any sales commission; the Artist collects 100% of sales of any work displayed here and ALWAYS keeps 100% copyright/rights.

ENTRIES AND PUBLIC RECORD: ALL Artwork entries including winners profiles will be displayed on the website. Each entry becomes part of the permanent, historical online competition archive.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY SUBJECT MATTER: There is no restriction on subject matter, but please make sure the entry is "family friendly" due to online publishing standards and the fact that social media sites like Facebook do not accept posts with obvious nudity. Nudes are accepted with the clear understanding that we may crop the painting prior to posting on social media. We don't consider artwork "family friendly" if it graphically depicts violence or suicide, or is in any way sexually explicit.

ARTIST'S ORIGINAL WORK ONLY: Only Artwork that is personally created by the Artist who enters is eligible. Paintings must be the Artist's original creation and not a copy of someone else's copyrighted art or photography.

SIGNATURE: It is highly recommended, but not required, that the Artist's signature be visible in the photo of the painting, to ensure protection of the Artist's copyright and ownership of the art. You may also apply your name in small print along the bottom edge of the photo of your art (using Photoshop or other image software).

JUDGES/JURY: For each month of the competition, the judge or jury shall consist of one or more highly accomplished art professionals. The decision of the judge or jury is final. (For clarification on why we use the term "judge" rather than "jury," here is the definition: "A jury is a group of ordinary individuals who are chosen by a court to hear the evidence presented by both the defendant and the plaintiff and gives a verdict on a case while a judge is a person who has studied law and is knowledgeable about it and can be appointed by the government or elected to preside over a court." Since we use art professionals who are knowledgeable and experienced, we prefer to use the term that best describes them: Judge.

Important Note About Judges: Qualified Professional Artists (those who work as Artists full time and have a substantial award/show/commission resume) who have already entered the competition in a previous month may be selected to serve as a judge ONLY IN A MONTH IN WHICH THEY ARE NOT PARTICIPATING. The judging of all finalists at the end of 12 months will be by an art professional or art professional group which has NOT participated in the competition.

JUDGING CRITERIA: REPRESENTATIONAL Paintings will be judged according to excellence in the following areas: color, values, composition, treatment of subject matter (mood), creativity/originality, drawing, and overall execution/presentation. NONREPRESENTATIONAL is judged according to the same criteria, without consideration of drawing.

WINNER ANNOUNCEMENT: Awards winners will be announced and posted by or shortly after the 20th of the following month.

CASH PRIZES: The monthly cash prize to Best in Show. Cash prizes are considered taxable if exceeding a certain amount ($600 or more within the same year); USA winners will receive a 1099-MISC form they must complete and return prior to payment.
